We always plan our transfer from the airport to the hotel ahead of time. It prevents us from wasting time and struggling to find the best way to reach our hotel. Getting from Barcelona Airport to the city center is very easy with multiple transportation options. The airport is well-connected to all parts of the city through various public and private transportation sources. Our hotel was near La Rambla, which is a famous street in the heart of the city. So, we knew getting there wouldn’t be a challenge.
This time, we were traveling without our kids and didn’t have much luggage with us. It was the only reason we opted for public transport from the airport. However, we checked all available transport options and their costs at the airport, so we can write a comprehensive guide for you on getting from Barcelona Airport to the city center.
Before we discuss the transport options at Barcelona Airport one by one, here is a short introduction to the airport:
Barcelona Airport (BCN)
Barcelona Airport is officially named Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, and its IATA Code is BCN. It’s located just 12 kilometers away from the city center in the southwestern part of the city. The airport has two main terminals, which are known as T1 and T2. More than 360000 flights have been operated from the airport in 2025, which makes it the second and seventh busiest airport in Spain and Europe, respectively.
All major airlines include this airport in their worldwide network. We reached here after a few hours at Fiumicino Airport in Rome due to a connecting flight. We experienced beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea because the airport’s runway is adjacent to the shore. As we weren’t too tired, we decided to use public transport to get from the Barcelona Airport to the City Center.

The complete train route map in Barcelona is shown in the following image.
To catch a train at Barcelona Airport, head to the train station located at Terminal 2. The directions to the train station are well-marked, which makes it easy to find without any worry. Avail the facility of free shuttle bus service to reach Terminal 2 if your flight lands at Terminal 1. Train tickets can be bought from ATMs available in different parts of the airport. We had a Hola BCN Card, so we didn’t need to buy a ticket.

The bus is also a convenient way to reach the city center from Barcelona airport. AeroBus Service runs every 5 minutes from the BCN Airport Terminals 1 and 2. The Aerobus from Terminal 1 is known as A1, while the other one from Terminal 2 is called A2. Booking a hotel along the bus route or near the following locations would be a great idea when planning where to stay in Barcelona:
- Barcelona Airport (BCN)
- Plaça Espanya
- Gran Via-Urgell
- Plaça de l’ Universitat
- Plaça Catalunya (Final Stop)
Tickets for riding the AeroBus shuttle can be purchased at ATMs located throughout the airport. You don’t need to worry if you see a crowd at ATMs because tickets can also be purchased on board. Moreover, online ticketing is also available for the AeroBus. Moving from BCN Airport to the city center by bus can be a good option for solo travelers.
Night Bus Service at Barcelona Airport
You don’t need to worry about catching a bus to the city center if your flight is landing late at night. The night bus runs every 20 minutes and helps travelers avoid getting taxis and other expensive transport to reach downtown Barcelona. The night bus N17 departs from Terminal 1 and N16 from Terminal 2. N18 is a backup bus for the heavy rush of passengers and can depart from both terminals. The operational timing for the night bus service at Barcelona Airport is between 21:55 and 04:45.

Only a few travelers know that Barcelona Airport is also connected to the main city by metro. There is a big metro network spread throughout the city, and enjoying a metro ride must be on your things to do in Barcelona list. The L9 metro line connects Barcelona Airport with downtown. However, the airport’s connection to downtown isn’t direct, and you need to change the metro at Torrassa. That’s why the metro isn’t used by most of the tourists. But it’s an ideal transport option for those whose hotel is located near the metro stations.

As always, a taxi is the most expensive, but fastest way to leave the airport for your hotel. Taxis in Barcelona are well managed and provide a comfortable way to get anywhere in the city. After stepping out of the airport, you can easily identify a taxi by its yellow and black colors. Taxis are easily accessible at both terminals of the airport. The duration of a taxi ride from BCN to the city center depends on traffic conditions, but it normally takes anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes. The cost of travelling in a taxi also depends on the time of day, traffic conditions, and luggage.
Taxi drivers in Barcelona are well-mannered and professional, but you need to be aware of overcharging and other common scams. Blind trust in strangers is one of the things not to do in Barcelona. So, always prefer official taxi services and be cautious when interacting with drivers. We mostly use taxis for airport to hotel transfer, but this time, since we weren’t traveling with our kids, we enjoyed a train ride.
Chauffeur Service from BCN Airport to the City Center
Enjoy the journey from the airport to your hotel in style by getting a Chauffeur service. It’s the best option if you prefer a private transfer service. Previously, I have experienced such excellent service in Copenhagen. The driver will be waiting for you at the exit point of the airport, and the ride can be private or shared, which depends on the option you selected at the time of booking. The chauffeur service costs you the same as, or less than, a taxi. In short, it’s a much better option than a taxi if you’re traveling in a group or with family.
